Getting Around In Costa Rica

Hello all,

I wanted to provide you with the transportation options in Costa Rica.
(Keep in mind that although Colones are the official currency in Costa Rica, the dollar is accepted and used almost everywhere in the country)

It is approximately 3.5 hours from San Jose to Manuel Antonio.

Shuttles= Like interbus or Grayline. Shuttle are reliable and affordable. They run between all popular destinations and will pick up/ drop off at hotels. Ask for child discounts. Casey and I have used the shuttle and had a great and easy experience.

Private drivers= This is the most expensive and hassle-free option. You can call Costa Verde and arrange for pick up and drop off to and from the airport. Keep in mind that it is a long ride and you will be charged more.

Taxis= Somewhat expensive, but not as pricey as cabs in the U.S. Beware that cabs are abundant, but not all are legal. Legal cabs are red with a yellow triangle on the side. Set rates are usually more cost efficient than going with the meter, if you are provided the option. In rural areas it is okay to take a cab that is not "official" because there won't be many other options for getting around.

Public Bus= This is the cheapest option. They run frequently and are pretty punctual. It costs only $8.00 one way from San Jose to Manuel Antonio (and vice versa). Use the "Directo" buses when possible. No need to speak Spanish since most people speak at least a little English. Keep an eye on your bags though.

There are other options for those of you who have already been traveling around Costa Rica and are coming from other locations. These include a combination of Jeep/Boat/Jeep, Taxi/Boat/Taxi, or Watertaxi.

Packing for Costa Rica

Hi friends and family,

Temperatures in Costa Rica should be warm-hot even at night and in higher altitudes. It will also be wet since July is a "green season". Frequent showers can be expected, but are typically short-lived and it does not mean that the sun will not be out.

It is wise to pack a poncho or light rain jacket. If you plan on doing any hiking (rainforest or jungle) bring a good pair of sneakers or hiking shoes or boots. It is best to have on footwear that covers the toes and goes up to the ankle. Sandals are okay for all other beach and non-hiking activities.

It is also a good idea to bring aloe, sunblock with a high SPF, neosporin, and bug spray.

This national park is right next door to Costa Verde, where we will be celebrating the wedding. This park is also home to a few gorgeous, preserved beaches that are only accessible from inside the park. We visited one of the beaches last time we were there, and it was one of the most beautiful I have ever seen.
